The Folk Art Hat
My inspiration is the era of traveling Medicine Men, tellers of tall tales and wearers of tall hats. For all their showmanship and snake oil the real power lay with the women folks. While looking back, this female linage still exists today in root workers, the Granny Healers, the practitioners of Appalachian folk magic.
The small twigs, which could have been used in a remedy, which appear charm like, reminding us that nature is healing. Magic also lies in the making of the hat, in the ancient art of felting. There is ritual in its setting up, the repetitive action urges me to let go of perceived ideas, surrender to the moment and accept what may happen.
Medicine hats are made in the ancient tradition of wet felting. It’s a bit of a ritual making these hats made in the ancient tradition of wet felting, they are guaranteed to cure all ills.
Mini (topless) top hats!
Mini top hats are a touch Victorian, a pinch gypsy, a dash of showgirl, a pinch burlesque and a hint or two of Steampunk. I wet felt the basic hat, which is topless and the hat is worn with a headband.
